At my last bday party I had an overwhelming urge to draw and sketched out this and another face (also on a tee now). It was a liberating moment, partly due to using oil pastels which i dont like and never use, and even more exciting was to print what had felt like a purely process-based work where I only made it to survive the situation and give it this permanence and new life. Living as an artist to me partly means getting this unique and beautiful exposure to magic moments, and even getting to share in their creation. This sticker is made from an image I took after seeing a banana peel and writing my tag lunch next to it. Food references time references abundance and scarcity and inequality references and light hearted jokes about it all. So when I saw what appears to me bright pink iced cake smeared on a lamp post, it was a truly delightful opportunity to add this sticker. What a special moment for me. I also love to wonder about whether anyone noticed this, and what they might have thought or felt. I wonder how that pink stuff got there and why. So many questions, some about nothing, some invented. This is how I get to know the spaces around me, human and non-human and all of our traces combining in public space. Been wanting to experiment for years with wood carving and burning, I guess craving to learn and practice more craft based creative work. Grateful to @bibabicyclette for starting the Creative Pack, a series of art-making-in-community workshops, where a new group of wonderful people including @chrisanthachetty , @benjamin.castle , @avorakamayifos , @tishamyles and others met regularly at @jd_social_gadfly beautiful space to work on our projects together. It was a beautiful way of holding apace for each other, and in following @rickrubin 's book The Creative Act, I got to water this seed of wood burning and carving. Frame 1 is one of my early experiments, and frame 2 has the details of Saturday's event where I'll be showing my first full piece from the workshop series. There'll also be ways to enjoy mine and the other participants art through taste-based entry points designed by the great Chrisantha Chetty. I'm excited. On a customary whisky-fuelled walk around the 6 with my friend @jonathan.r.rose , he asked me why do I put stickers up in public space. I didn't have much of an answer at the time and not sure I do yet but I'm working through it by writing about it. I've always loved collecting, and a favourite memory of my childhood bedroom was the side of a bookshelf where I was allowed to stick stickers. Years later, travelling to big cities around the world, I fell in love with doors and electrical boxes and the back of signs adorned with paint marker tags and of course, amazing assortments of stickers. I think i started fantasizing then about adding my own marks to such surfaces, but for years all I did was take pictures. Gradually I started experimenting with some graffiti writing, and I love that kind of transgressive act that to me adds a lot to the fabric and aesthetic social tapestry of a city. So finally having started printing stickers with my own art (in this case a photo of a drawing I did on a truck) and having the chance to add them to beautiful, collective public artworks like this doorway near where I live feels like a bit of self-actualising.
